Rare original and complete newspaper, Gentleman’s Magazine, January 1792, 96pp., disbound, VG. From the interior there a report “Defeat of the American Troops by the Indians”, in part, “Lexington, Nov. 11, 1791 ... The loss is great. The garrison at Fort Jackson is intercepted ... defeat under General St. Clair ...” The report is a full page. ... then, “... Masters were put to death by the most excruciating tortures ... Insurrection of the Negroes in St. Dominggo” is an exectionally long report 3-1/2 pages with brutal detail. “... 100,000 negroes were in rebellion... but above 10,000 of our fellow citizens dead are the victims of this cruel revolt. Can sensibilities be mute when we reflect that 15,000 Negroes will be destroyed before order and tranquilty can be restored ...” The Haitian Revolution was the only slave uprising that led to the founding of a state free from slavery and ruled by non-whites
