MAHAM, Hezekiah (1739-1789) was a South Carolina militia officer, developed the Maham Tower. Manuscript Document Signed, “Hez. Maham,” May 12, 1777, 1pp., 12” x 8.” In part, “ Have inclosed #50 which you please rec’d as it is the Rec’d of W. Whitefield ....” April 15-23, 1781, under the command of Brig. Gen. Francis Marion, Maham developed the Maham Tower. On the night of April 22nd, his men assembled a 40-foot tall, oblong tower, which was higher than Fort Watson's rampart. At daylight of April 23rd, the riflemen climbed the tower and began firing into the British held Fort Watson, through loopholes in the floor, causing the Fort’s surrender to Gen. Francis Marion.
