Authentic issue of the Washington Gazette, January 19, 1822, 4pp., disbound, scattered foxing. An unusual runaway slave advertisement, “$10 Reward, Eloped from the residence of Charles Cutts, Esq. on Capitol Hill, last week, a yellow woman named Susan Dear, slave for life, about 37 years of age ... first rate cook. ... John H. Sherburne.” Charles Cutts was a United States Senator from New Hampshire. Born in Portsmouth, he graduated from Harvard University in 1789. He was elected Secretary of the United States Senate and served from October 12, 1814, to December 12, 1825.
