Newspaper Group. Caledonian Mercury, Edinburgh, was published three times a week between 1720–1867. Group of 11 1768 issues, each 4pp., disbound, very good. Each issue carries editorials, illustrated tall ship ads, and some news. But most important is the clearly visible red British Half Penny Import Stamp. The Stamp Act 1765 imposed a direct tax by the British Parliament specifically on the colonies of British America, and it required that many printed materials in the colonies be produced on stamped paper produced in London, carrying an embossed revenue stamp. These printed materials were legal documents, magazines, newspapers and many other types of paper used throughout the colonies.
