From the interior pages, under heading “Galveston and Amelia,” running six pages, are several letters concerning the activity on Galveston. In small part, “... I deem it my duty to state that the most shameful violations of the slave act ... by a motley mixture of freebooters and smuglers ... Galveston is a small island situate in the Bay of St. Barnard ...The establishment was recently made by a commodore Aury ... Among the most conspicuous characters who happen to be a Galveston ... the Laffites and most actively engaged in the Galveston trade... It is stated and universally believed that captain Champlin sold slaves captured ... to the Laffites ... that the principle part ... had returned to Galveston and that two prizes with slaves have recently arrived, one a schooner with a full cargo said to be 300...The other ship with 400 slaves. ... that Lafiite arrived with forty other persons and it is believed intended to form an establishment ....” Minor foxing.
