Union soldier's letter, 2-1/2pp., written by Adolph M. Levi who enlisted on 8/23/1862 he mustered into "F" Co. MA 38th Infantry and was wounded, 6/14/1863, Port Hudson, LA. He was Mustered Out on 6/30/1865 at Savannah, GA. Datelined Goldsborough NC, April 29, 65. Adolph explains his lack of writing due to severe illness. He then advises Miss Carrie of his various stations and locations including, "I joined the Reg. at Camp Russel about five miles south of Winchester ... having done picket duty three or four times ... where Mosby made an occasional visitor ... we again embarked for Wilmington .. we were ordered to More-Head-City, like many Southern cities containing about half a dozen nxxxxxs shanties ... The prospect of our Country, thank heaven, is good, but it is a sad thing to have our glorious President's career cut short by an assassins knife, hired by a mock chivalry and a mock Confederacy ... This is one of the deserved punishments for our manifold sins and crimes of selling the innocent for a pair of shoes as the Profit has it ..."
