A complete and authentic issue of State Gazette, Austin Texas, January 18, 1861, 4pp., disbound, a printing defect obscures about 1/5 of the second page, small ad clipped from the back page. From the front page and running 4 full columns is a raging speech by Hon. W(illiam) S(impson) Oldham advocating secession. In it he reviews the President-Elect Lincoln's views on slavery including, " I believe that this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the house to fall. I do not expect the Union to dissolve; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind will rest the further spread it, and place it where the public mind will rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, until it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new, north as well as South." The Lincoln commentary continues for 1-1/2 columns.
