A group of three Niles Weekly Registers, Baltimore, October 10, 1818; April 10, 1824; October 18, 1828; each 16pp., disbound, VG. From October 10, 1818 issue, a brief interior report, “A colored fellow has been taken up and sentenced to three years imprisonment to hard labor, and a fine of 300l for kidnapping three free negroes, which he was believed to have disposed of foe slaves.” ... plus, from the April 10, 1824, back page, “Kidnapping” reports that in Snow Hill, Maryland “three slaves employed by a colored man named Purnell in the business of kidnapping persons of their own color, waylaid a victim who attempted to make his escape. They beat him so much that they killed him .. the carcase was thrown in the river. .. He was a notorious villain and supposed to have kidnapped and sent off hundreds of free persons. ...” ... plus, from the issue of October 18, 1828, an interior report, “A Kidnapper.” Reports of Philadelphia slave stealer “Being found guilty, he was sentenced to pay a fine of $2000 and to undergo imprisonment .. for twenty one years. ...”
