Called "one of the most brilliant of all the members of the New York bar", most notable for his career as a criminal lawyer, being involved in numerous high-profile proceedings. He handled fifty-two murder trials and lost only one. Among his most famous legal undertakings was the defense of Daniel Sickles during his trial for the murder of Philip Barton Key. John Johnstone Wallack (1820-1888), was an American actor-manager. He was manager of the second Wallack's Theatre from 1861. George Bancroft (1800-1891) was an American historian, statesman and Democratic politician who was prominent in promoting secondary education both in his home state of Massachusetts and at the national and international levels. During his tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.
