John Letcher (1813-1884) was an American lawyer, journalist, and politician. He served as a Representative in the United States Congress, was the 34th Governor of Virginia during the American Civil War. Document, 9-1/2" x 8", Signed as Governor, "John Letcher", dated May 1, 1861. Letcher commissions Samuel S. Kent as Lieutenant in the 11th Brigade of the 1st Division of the VIRGINIA MILITIA. On the reverse, G.B. Stark attests that Kent took the oaths of allegiance. Kent would later join the VA 14th Infantry as 1st Lt.
