Union soldier's 3pp. pencil letter, written on patriotic stationary with scarce engraved image of the U.S. Treasury, by "Henry" C. Merwin who enlisted on 4/22/1861 as a Sergeant, was commissioned into Field & Staff CT 27th Infantry. He was POW 5/3/1863 Chancellorsville, VA., paroled 5/23/1863, and promoted Lt Colonel 10/2/1862. Lt. Col. Merwin was Killed on 7/2/1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Datelined Washington May 16, 1861, to his mother. In part, "I must tell about our camp. It is two miles from the City. Our Officers tents are on top of a hill. Just a foot of the hill is a small stream. ... Had a number of NH gents in our camp ... Last night about six o'clock (we) went over to a farm house about 1/4 mile from Camp and they gave us a splendid supper ... "
