HARDIN, Martin Davis (1837-1923) Union general. He was a family friend and protege of Abraham Lincoln (it was at the Hardin family home that Lincoln first met his wife, Mary Todd). Hardin graduated from West Point in the Class of 1859, and was an aide to Robert E. Lee in the hanging of John Brown soon after. He lost an arm in the Civil War. After the war he became a lawyer in Chicago, and had a winter home in St. Augustine, Florida. His second wife, Amelia McLaughlin (1863–1939) was the sister-in-law of Irene Castle, the famous dancer. Post-war manuscript containing his perspective of the Civil War for the early part of the war, most likely copied from his war-date records as they are recorded in the present tense. Written in pencil, the cover ID's the piece as "Gen. Hardin , ???? of the War" with dozens of pages, and in turn-of-the-century notebook, that is quite fragile, therefore in brief: “...the Regt joined in the expedition to Drakesville which resulted in a severe skirmish & a decided victory...on approaching the village our flanking parties were driven in, & the regt was again formed in line to received the attack on the turnpike & behind which the enemy appeared to be in force. Before it was fairly in position the enemy opened with a heavy fire of shot and shell which fell thick & fast... Easton’s batl. soon opened & partially silenced his guns, but the infy could only hold the position...the ground was strewn with dead and wounded and piles of cannon balls...” Much much more, but fragile and needs to be examined in person.
