GERRY, Elbridge (1744-1814) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Gerry served Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives, was Governor (1810-1812), and was Madison's Vice-President, 1813-1814. His manipulation of Congressional districts in Massachusetts gave rise to the term "gerrymander". Document signed 14-1/2’ x 9,” as Governor and Commander in Chief, “E. Gerry,” on military appointment for Daniel Longfellow” April 8, 1812 to be Lieutenant of a Company in the 1st regiment infantry in the 2nd Brigade and 10th Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth .... The document retains the original seal, has tanned. ...plus, A certification card issued to Daniel Longfello as a member of the Washington Benevolent Society, May 25, 1812, 3-1/2” x 2-1/2,” also tanned.
