Partially printed document, one page, oblong 8vo, Lexington, Virginia, January 15, 1835, wherein one William Weaver is bound unto Washington College to the tune of $180 for the "hire of negro Henry the ensuing year, and shall give to said negro two suits of summer clothing of good materials, and return him at Christmas next, well clothed for the winter…" William Weaver of Rockbridge County hired slaves to run his iron furnace at Buffalo Forge, Virginia. Late 20th century historian Charles Dew explores Weaver's industrial use of slaves in Bond of Iron: Master and Slave at Buffalo Forge. Very good condition.
