BURNET, William, (1730–91), political leader in the American Revolution, a physician practicing in Newark, Burnet was chairman of the Revolutionary committee of safety there. He set up (1775) a military hospital and helped to furnish troops and supplies for the Continental army and later became surgeon general of the army for the eastern district; also a member of the Continental Congress in 1776 and in 1780. Autograph letter signed, “Wm. Burnet,” 1pp., legal folio, Fish Kill, July 22, 1779, small loss from seal tear, minor marginal tears, light toning along folds. Burnet writes his wife, in part “I have nor heard from Dr. Shippen - Where he stays I know not - Gen’l Washington has moved to West Point, where Gen’l Green is I know not. I suppose Imma has got home by this time as he wrote me a few days ago that he designed to apply for service ...”
