MOULTRIE, William (1731-1805) American general in the Revolution. Represented South Carolina in teh Continental Congress in 1775. He successfully defended Sullivan’s Island against a British fleet in Charleston Harbor in 1776. The fort there [Fort Moultrie] was named in his honor. He defeated the British at Beaufort and successfully defended Charleston in 1779.
