Handcolored Ornate Manuscript Poem titled, “THE SLAVE” by “B Noges,” in frame, 9-1/2” x 11-1/2 . The Three Stanza Poem is beautifully written in rich dark brown ink upon c. 1820-30 period fresh white wove paper. The poem portion itself and other text is located within an oval surround, made up of of colorful yellow, black and blue watercolor dots and designs. This very attractive, eye catching and likely unique historic Slavery Theme Poem reads, in full: “The Slave -- Christian mother, when thy prayer - Trembles on the twilight air - And thou askest God to keep - In their waking and their sleep - Those whose love is more to thee - Than the wealth of land or sea - Think of those who wildly mourn. - For the loved ones from them torn! - Oh forget not those for whom - Life is nought but changeless gloom, - O’er whose days of cheerless sorrow, - Hope may paint no brighter morrow! -- B Noges.” Fine condition.
