A good copper-plate, 8 1/2" x 14", London, ca. 1792, on laid paper, entitled: "The ENGAGEMENT of Captn. Pearson in HIS MAJESTY'S Ship Serapis, with Paul Jones of the American Ship of War called the Bon Homme Richard: in which Action the former was taken, while the Countess of Scarborough was also captured by the Pallas frigate." An exact example of those produced for Barnard's New-Completed Authentic History of England. It is interesting to note that this print does not bear the legend at the top indicating that it was not produced for that book. Therefore, this print was produced as a stand alone although it was accomplished by the same manufacturers. Sculpted by Thornton and drawn by William Hamilton (1751-1801). This print shows American naval hero John Paul Jones in command of the Bon Homme Richard engaged in battle with the British fleet on Sept. 23, 1779. The print is surrounded by a highly stylized border with a royal military motif at the bottom. From the archives of the famed Kean Archives, Philadelphia. Very good to near fine with light soiling.
