An authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, April 1767, 52pp., disbound, near fine. From the interior, a 3-1/2 page American report, under “An Extract of Mr. William Bartram’s Observations In a Journey Up the River Savannah in Georgia, With His Son, On Discoveries.” The observations are for the month of September and provide a fascinating account of back country Georgia. Then, under American News, there is a shocking slave revolt report. From Jamaica, in large part “Some late dangerous insurrections among the Negroes have a length been happily crushed. ... for desperate wrenches who were engaged neither spared age or sex in their fury, nor even children of their own color; nor were they satisfied with barely killing the people, but they cut and mangled their bodies ... Such of them that fell into hands were burnt alive in a slow fire, begining at their feet and burning upwards. It is astonishing with what resolution they bore the torture, smiling with an air of contempt at their executioners.”
