The Liberator (1831-1865) was an abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison in 1831. Although its circulation was only about 3,000, and three-quarters of subscribers were African Americans, the newspaper earned nationwide notoriety for its uncompromising advocacy of "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves" in the United States.Newspaper, “The Liberator,” Boston, August 24, 1860, 4pp., slight stain upper left, never bound. Filled with news, letters, and editorials advocating abolition. To name a few, front page letter to Wendell Phillips regarding candidate Abraham Lincoln, in part “Abraham Lincoln the Slave Hound of Illinois,” cites Lincoln’s 1849 bill requiring the District of Columbia to ‘deliver up to their owners All Fugitive Slaves escaping into the district ..” On page 2, an article “Mr. Lincoln and the Colored Folks,” extracting several public statements by Lincoln such as, “Our opinion is that it would be best for all concerned to have the colored population all in one State by themselves. In this I agree.” Then, “I will tell you very frankly, I am not in favor of Negro citizenship.” plenty more Lincoln related comments. Then, front page report “Twenty Two Insurrectionists Hung,” as a result of a Negro conspiracy in Texas.
