War-date Confederate soldier letter by Robert M. Rucker, 2nd Tennessee Infantry, 4pp. quarto, Frankfort, Kentucky, October 3, 1862, and reads in part: "...Our army 'Hardees' division left Tupelo, Miss. the 21st of July...we met the enemy at Richmond, Ky in superior force to ours, killed wounded and captured 9,000 of them and put the balance to route, with the small loss on our side of but 350 killed and wounded, this number includes all in the battles the same fought of the 30th of August, Saturday - we were but 6,000 strong against a force of theirs of 16,000 - halted and made a stand - we moved on their batteries putting them to flight -they retreated to Richmond just before the town where they made their last desperate stand, after an hour or two of hard fighting they were put to an inglorious route - we got in their rear and captured including what ever taken on the field about 5 or 6,000..."
