Very rare Confederate broadside entitled "HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE The 1st, 4th, 5th Texas, and 18th Georgia, Hampton Legion." with battle honors for West Point, Seven Pines, Gaine's Mill, Malvern Hill, Rappahannock, Thoroughfare Gap, Manassas, Boonsboro, Sharpsburg, Elk Horn, Woodsonville, and Calcasieu. Also contains a letter from General Robert E. Lee to General Wigfall which contains a memorable line "With a few more such regiments as those which Hood now has, as an example of daring and bravery, I could fee much more confidence of the results of the campaign." and a letter from General Gustavus Smith to Colonel Horace Randal, which states in part: "...The Texans won immortal honor for themselves, their State, and for their commander, General Hood, at the battle of Eltham Landing, near West Point. With 40,000 such men I would no hesitate to invade the North, and would, before winter, make them sue for peace upon our terms, or destroy their whole country. But in praise of the Texas Brigade of my Division I could talk a week, and then not say half they deserve. If the regiments now organized in Texas could be transported here and armed to morrow, properly led, they would end the war in three months." Followed by "Song- Hood's Texas Brigade." 8-3/4"x12-1/2" with manuscript on verso "To his Excellency the President." Fine.
