Signed Carte-de-Visite, "Jeffn. Davis, 5th Dec. 1866," bust up vignette, E.H. Anthony, New York on verso. Some foxing in background, dark signature. Additionally, in another hand on the verso, "Mr. Davis' own signature, written for Mrs. Fairbanks while he was in prison. Rene(?) from Mamma, Dec. 29, 1881." After being captured May 10, 1865, Davis was held as a prisoner for two years in Fort Monroe, Virginia. This is the only known prison-signed photograph of Jefferson Davis.
