silver, dome crystal closure, Roman Numeral dial, 2-1/4 diameter x 3/4 thick, no maker mark. Engraved on the reverse, Leonidas Polk, 1827, U.S.M.A. Polk graduated 8th of a class of 38 from the United States Military Academy in 1827. A watch FOB is attached with a 16 silver chain, marked Made in England. The front of the FOB is engraved, U.S.M.A., 1827, and a silver disc attached and engraved, LP. On the FOBs reverse, General Leonidas Polk, CSA, 1861. Polk was commissioned a Major General on June 25, 1861. On June 14, 1864, Polk was scouting enemy positions near Marietta, Georgia, with his staff when he was killed in action by a Federal 3-inch Hotchkiss shell at Pine Mountain. Although there is no accompanying paperwork, the watch are and its engraving appear period. The FOB was likely engraved on both sides and added to watch in 1861.
