A good war-date Union government official's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Paymaster's Clerk James P. Livingston, Elmira, New York, July 8, 1865 to his father Captain Robert W. Livingston, 118th New York, in part: "what do you think of the hangingat Washington yesterday? Mrs. Surratt thought it rather severe not to give her only one day to turn her lamps in; but I reckon if she had a week she would never have got them burning bright enough to save her. I suppose she has gone to the sulfurous climate straight". Near fine
