Broadside, Military Despotism! Arbitrary Arrest of a Judge, 12 x 19,, two colmn with spashy headline, printed by Derham, NY., minor margin tears else fine. Through newspaper and letter excerpts, the broadside relates the fining of General Jackson during the War of 1812. In 1815, shortly after the Battle of New Orleans, General Jackson ordered the arrest of a member of the Louisiana legislature for writing what he considered a seditious article. Additionally Jackson ordered the arrest Judge Dominick Hall who in turn had Jackson cited for arresting Hall. When Jackson refused to honor a writ of habeas corpus, he was found guilty of contempt of court and fined $1,000. In 1842, when former President Jackson was in considerable financial difficulty, Congress ordered the fine repaid with interest. According to this broadside, Jackson received about $2,700.
