President Garfield was shot in Washington, D.C. in July 1881. In early September he was not doing well. His doctors thought that the fresh air on the shores of New Jersey would benefit the ailing President. Garfield, along with his family and doctors, boarded a train and headed for New Jersey on September 6, 1881. As the President headed for New Jersey local residents began building a short spur to get the President's train to the home he would be staying in. The President arrived at the home on September 6, and died on September 19. The added tracks were dismantled and hauled away. Pieces were given out as souvenirs, including the spikes that were used. This spike being one of those souvenirs. The spike, which measures 5 ", has the inscriptions "Central R.R. Of N.J. James Garfield Francklyn Cottage Elberon September 6-21 1881". The spike is in fine condition, and a great Presidential artifact.
