Bound Volume, "The Monthly Review or Literary Journal" London, June 1773 through January 1774, 596 pp., plus index, ex-library, boards present but loose, interior pages VG. From the December issue, "'Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral' By Phillis Wheatley, Negro Servant to Mr. John Wheatley of Boston in New England." In part, "IF we believed, with the ancient mythologists, that genius is the offspring of the fun, we should rather wander that the sable race have not been more distinguished by it, than express our surprise at a single instance. ...The poems written by this young negro bear no endemial marks of solar fire or spirit. They are merely imitative ; and, indeed, most of those people have a turn for imitation, though they have little or none for invention. ...We are much concerned to find that this ingenious young Trornan it yet a slave. The people of Boston boast themselves chiefly on their principles of liberty. One such act as the purchase of her freedom, would, in our opinion, have done them more honour than hanging a thousand trees with ribbons and emblems."
