Newspaper, Frank Leslie's Illustrated, December 21, 1861, complete issue, 16pp., disbound, VG. Front cover depicts a 1/2 page engraving "Negroes Escaping From Beaufort SC, with Plunder from the Abandoned Residences of Their Masters ...." The text shows considerable racism, in part, "Our artist has sent us a very racy sketch of the spectacle presented by the emancipated contrabands ... of their Southern masters which put Sambo, Dinah and the picaninies in the position of Selkirk on his desolate island. Lords of all they surveyed. Then a strong center spread, "Scene in the Principal Square of Savannah Georgia ...." Shows the mass exodus of both Blacks and Whites upon the news of the fall of Tybee Island.
