WINDER, John Henry (1800-1865)was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction during the Mexican War. He later served as a Confederate general officer during the American Civil War. Winder was noted for commanding prisoner-of-war camps throughout the South during the war, and for charges of improperly supplying the prisoners in his charge. War-date Confederate Autograph Document Signed by John H. Winder, as Brigadier General and in Command of the prisons at Richmond, 1pp. 3"x8", Richmond, Virginia, February 10, 1862, being a pass permitting the father of Lt. Colonel John Markoe, 71st Pennsylvania to visit his son who was imprisoned at Legion's Tobacco Warehouse. Fine condition
