War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by G.A. Bright, 3pp. quarto, Camp near Dalton, Georgia, March 4, 1864, and reads in part: "...about the 18th ult. Cheathams & Cleburns divisions left here for the purpose of reinforcing Polk in Mississippi before they reached that place the enemy advanced here in our front supposing that the most of our army had been withdrawn from this place. Our whole army here was thrown forward in line of battle. Cheatham's & Cleburne were turned back, and reached this place 22d, the enemy after a brisk engagement on our left near Tunnel Hill were satisfied that our force here was too strong for them and fell back to Chattanooga. We remained in line of battle five days. We then returned to our old quarters, the enemy only have a small force now at Chattanooga. They will not advance again until they are heavily reinforced as the Mississippi expedition is a failure Sherman's forces will I suppose reinforce Grant at Chattanooga. Our loss here in the engagement was about two hundred killed & wounded, not more than one or two brigades were engaged. Lt. Gen. Hood has arrived and has taken command of our Corps. ..."
