CESNOLA, Luigi Palma di (1832 -904), an Italian-American soldier and amateur archaeologist, was born in Rivarolo Canavese, near Turin, received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Aldie, Va., June 17, 1863, where he was wounded and captured. Autograph Letter Signed "Luigi," Libby Prison, Richmond Va., November 27, 1863, 3pp. In part, "One hundred and one surgeons went away yesterday unconditionally released. ... The Richmond papers speak as though no more exchanges will take place. .. The policy will make of brave soldiers a flock of cowards ... judge for yourself what will be the result? ...they will turn their shoulders & back to the enemy. ..."
