War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Elbert S. Woodward, 64th Virginia Infantry, 3pp. octavo, Fort Delaware, October 7, 1864, with cover with Camp Chase circular stamp, it reads in part: "...Politicians tell us we owe three allegiances, first to God, 2nd our country, 3rd to ourselves, here I must differ with them in the 2nd place. I think after our allegiance to God the 2nd should be ourselves, our parents & sisters & brothers, 3rd & when we can't help it in such a case as this then country. I think you had better stay at home & assist your parents, you know they need your help. I think you will do your whole duty so to do guard their welfare & preach at home & pray for your brothers at a distance, do not take any part in this cruel war by word or action. Do not place yourself in the way of your enemies. My hopes for the Confederacy are very much depressed, but their never was a cloud so dark but what behind there was a bright sun..."
