War-date Confederate soldier's Letter by John F. Croom, 18th North Carolina Infantry, POW at WIA at Chancellorsville, POW again at Spotsylvania Court House, who writes the letter on behalf of A.B. Rooks [POW and WIA at New Hanover Court House] due to his illness, 1pp. octavo, Ward 46 Prison Camp, Elmira, New York, December 27, 1864, and reads in part: "...I have been sick for some time...I was first taken with head cold and cough which afterwards turned to pneumonia or something of the sort. Since my sickness my appetite has become very weak too much so to relish the rations which we draw here in camp...I wish that you would send me a small box of eatables with coffee, sugar too..." Fine condition.
