War-date Confederate officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Will A. Redd, Adjt. 1st Missouri Cavalry, 1pp. quarto, Johnson's Island, Block 2 Room 19, April 25, 1865, and reads in part: "...I'm still very blue, it is with the greatest difficulty I can realize we are whipped, or at least almost so, nothing but the most miraculous intervention will save us. I cling to it, with that tenacity, which a drowning man does to a straw. But if Johnston surrendered then the gallant Shelby, I shall then feel that I am no longer a Confederate officer & shall endeavor to release myself from 'duranvile'. Even if I am released, I fear, I never again shall visit Missouri...in doing so, would possibly forfeit my life, if not would certainly hazard it. You can possibly guess the reasons..."
