Autograph Letter Signed by Confederate veteran John M. Weigle, 1st Battalion of Local Georgia Defenses, 2pp. quarto, August, Georgia, December 24, 1898, and reads in part: "...Berry Benson [1st South Carolina Infantry] was a private throughout the war, on the Confederate side. He was a hero throughout the entire struggle, and did many deeds of valor, which would have won for him official distinction - all of which he uniformly declined, as he preferred to serve in the ranks. I had the honor of serving with him, therefore know whereof I speak...he was the typical Confederate soldier, and when the ladies of the memorial association of Augusta wanted a typical soldier to surmount the Confederate monument on Broad Street, it was the same Berry Benson whom they selected photographed (with his old Confederate uniform and accoutrements) to be placed on top of this towering shaft, emblematic of constancy, bravery and fidelity to a cause, we and they loved..." With attached Confederate Reunion calling card for John M. Weigle and related newspaper clippings.
