TUTTLE, James Madison (1823-1892)was a soldier, businessman, and politician from the state of Iowa who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He commanded a brigade and then a division in the Army of the Tennessee in several campaigns in the Western Theater of operations. He led the first Union troops that entered the enemy-held Fort Donelson in 1862, paving the way for the fort's subsequent surrender to Ulysses S. Grant and opening the Cumberland River as an avenue of invasion of the South. War-date Union soldiers Signed Document, 1pp. quarto, at Camp Montgomery, Mississippi, July 19, 1862, addressed to Governor Kirkwood, pertaining to Wesley H. Henderson and his desire to be commissioned in an Iowa Regiment, stating that "Corpl Henderson is a most worthy man, and an efficient and well drilled soldier. He has constantly on duty since the organization of this Regiment and he participated in the memorable struggles of Donaldson and Shiloh, both of which he conducted himself as a true soldier..." Signed by Ermone E. Mastick Captain, 2nd Iowa, Lt. Colonel James Baker who died of wounds received at Corinth, JAMES M. TUTTLE as Brigadier General, Colonel James Baird Weaver WIA at Fort Donelson, later brevetted brigadier general, Lt Col. H.R. Cowles, Lt William F. Holmes who was WIA at Fort Donelson and later captured by guerillas in Mississippi, and by Lt. George F. Hall, who was WIA at Fort Donelson. Fine condition.
