War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by William T. Benjamin, 4th Delaware Infantry, 4-1/2pp. octavo, with portion of patriotic cover, it reads in part: “...Whoever said that I deserted is a liar and the truth ain’t in him. They could not drive me away from here...I will never live in Smyrna again, that old secession hole. This Regt dont want any better fun than to burn it down. Half the men in this company are from Smyrna. If they get sight on them traitors there they will kill them. I will give you 6 cts to shoot Hall & Hazel & send their heads up here...We were surprised one morning by seeing 3 or 4 large wagons full of ladies and good things. The Union ladies of Wilmington gave the Regt a large dinner...” Very good condition.
