War-date Union soldier's diary, small version, penned by Alfred S. Parmelle, 30th Massachusetts Infantry, who enlisted on October 9, 1861 and was discharged for disability on January 29, 1863 at New Orleans. This diary is ID on interior cover, and also inscribed "Presented by his affectionate wife on Feb 18th 1862 Rec. by him on March 27th 1862 at Ship Island, Miss." With entries reading in part: "...[3/26/1862]Engagement of New London with the Rebels. Flag of Truce...[4/5] 5 men drowned...[4/8] Gen. Butler returned...[4/10]On board ship Preemer in the AM Rebel schooner came in...[4/12]3 prisoners killed by lightening...[5/2] Butler at New Orleans...[5/6]Mortar fleet, gun boats arrv...[7/22] arrv. Baton Rouge..[7/26]Arrival of troops from up river...[8/5]Great battle at Baton Rouge..." and much more including mentions of Generals Dudley, Halbert & Paine as well as a list of the Baton Rouge casualties in memoranda section. Fine condition.
