Pair of war-date Autograph Letters Signed "Nancy Hudson" both 4pp. octavo, to her son William D. Hudson, who enlisted in July 1862 made lieutenant in July 1864 and mustered out at the end of the war. Both letters are datelined, South Bloomfield, Ohio, July 5 & November 8, 1863, and read in part: "...[7/5/63 on nice "UNION FOREVER" embossed lettersheet] I was not surprised to read in that letter that you had moved for the papers which are always posted with everyday news had told us of the fact of your moving and of the prospect of a fight somewhere near Tullahoma, and I tell you I with the rest of the soldiers friends were held in dread until we heard from you, which was in Wednesdays mail that night I slept, but the next days mail gave great anxiety again expecting another attack on the enemy and its awful consequences not knowing who might fall - but the next news gave an account of their retreat, now poor fellows you have to follow them further south to a hotter climate...there has been a general looking up here from the reports we have had by dispatch on yesterday our folks have been on the gain East and West, but Vicksburg is not taken yet, but report says they are about to surrender...General Meade is the right man in the right place...I sent you some tobacco and a necktie and some stamps...I will enclose a dispatch from Meade to the President on their victory and there was one came today in which there was forty thousand prisoners taken good for the new general...[11/8/63] I was anxious to hear from you before George Borden started back to the Reg....I knew there had been a fight again and some of Palmers division had been in it, but was not certain whether Crittenden's Corps was in the fight or no. The papers stated that the 11th and 12th Corps was in the fight but it spook of Palmers whole division being on both sides of the river....you have got so far off that we cannot send you many comforts only a little by individuals in their carpet sacks...I will send you all that I can by George Borden but he has to take some to Captain Rains [KIA near Atlanta] and others he will take your boots and two pairs of socks and your mittens and vest..."
