War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph Leonard Follet, Medal of Honor recipient, 1pp. quarto, Battery G, 1st Missouri Artillery, November 29, 1864, addressed to Brigadier General J.M. Brannon, Chief of Artillery Department of Cumberland, and reads "By direction of Genl. King I have the honor to request that I may be furnished with sufficient lumber for platforms for my guns. The nature of the soil & position necessary for my guns to occupy make this request absolutely necessary..." with docketing on integral leaf signed by Brigadier General JOHN M. BRANNON (1819-1892) who was cited for bravery and heroism at the Battle of Jacksonville, Florida, Chickamauga, and during the Atlanta campaign. Also signed by ANDREW JACKSON MACKAY (1827-1901) brevetted brigadier general for his services during the war , who states that "Captain Godfrey A.Q.M. on Lookout Mountain is directed to turn over to this officer the amount of lumber required for his purpose" . Also endorsed by LOUIS LAMBERT who was brevetted colonel for his role in the war. Fine condition. Joseph Follet (1843-1907) enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Missouri Infantry in September 1861. He served from through the entire war, being twice wounded in action [at Farmington, Miss. 5/9/62 & New Madrid, Missouri 3/2/62], serving under Generals Sherman, Pope, King and Steedman, and as a nineteen year old he was awarded the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, on October 8, 1862, after charging a battery. His citation reads "At New Madrid, MO., remained on duty though severely wounded. While procuring ammunition from the supply train at Stone River, Tenn., Follett was captured, but made his escape, secured the ammunition, and in less than an hour from the time of his capture had the batteries supplied." He later had extensive service during the Indian Wars era.
