War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph G. Rosengarten, 121st Pennsylvania Infantry, and a member of John Reynolds staff at Gettysburg, 1pp. octavo, inlaid, Philadelphia, January 18, 1876, addressed to General T.F. Rodenburgh and reads in part: "...The volume is a very handsome one indeed, and you deserve a great deal of praise for your capital execution of the very laborious task so successfully carried out by your patient industry..." Very good condition. ROSENGARTER, Joseph George (1835-1921) He was graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1852, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1856, studied in Heidelberg in 1857, and practiced after his return to his native city. During the Civil War he served on the staff of General John F. Reynolds in the Army of the Potomac. He was a scholar of note, as well as the author of many books and articles. He contributed frequently to periodicals. He wrote " The German Soldier in the Wars of the United States " (Philadelphia, 1881). He was the legal counsel of the German Society and German Hospital (now Lankenau), and served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society, a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, president of the Free Library of Philadelphia; president of the Glenn Mills School, and a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Rosengarten was a proud member of the Union League, and of the G.A.R..
