Hand Painted Coat of Arms, presented to Captain Benjamin J. Hill. Hill enlisted in 1861 in Company C, 9th Maine Volunteers, often promoted, served as Captain and Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General Joshua Chamberlain, wounded at Deep Bottom and Chaffins Farm. The oil on canvass painting is extraordinary. Hill's entire service record is hand painted in gold paint and in very small lettering into the cross area of the quartered shield. This provides minute detail of Hill's every promotion, every battle, each date, just great. The upper left quadrant "9th Maine" shows his stripes. The upper right quadrant ""Vol. Infantry" shows his epaulets. The lower left quadrant shows the regimental flags. And the lower right quadrant shows his hat pin and the American flag. Centered is the Maine state seal. Below the coat of arms is the banner presentation, "Captain Benjamin J. Hill." Overall very impressive although some paint missing upper right corner, and scattered lower right. Presented in modern frame.
