Superb Hogenberg detailed color engraving, 10" x 6-1/2", of a 1591 military engagement between French Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots). This engraving of a 1591 military confrontation during the Wars of Religion between French Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots) depicts over 1000 soldiers in battle with the Catholics firing their cannons at the Protestants. Among the identified troops are those loyal to the King led by the Prince de Conti and the Duke of Nevers and a regiment from Navarre ("Der Konigs Navarr folck"). King Henry IV himself ("Der Konig") is depicted as is Christian I, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg ("Christian furst zu Anhalt"), who led the Palatine army of 8000 foot and 6000 horse soldiers to aid the King. Named to command the army in February, Christian I died in September 1591. A caption of four couplets is printed across the lower margin. On laid paper with minor soiling. VG.
