Autograph Letter Signed by George Salsig of Plattsmouth, Nebraska Territory, 4pp. octavo, July 31, 1857, with cover addressed to his brother and election ticket for Territorial representative and officers, the letter reads in part: "...we have had some awful hot weather this month, the mercury has been up to 106, it is now up to 92 in the shade, so you may know that we have to keep pretty shady. One cause of such warm weather is that the people here are so hot on election. Next Monday is election day, I will then if I live & keep well vote for the first time in Nebraska. I will send you one of our tickets, it is all North & South Platte men here, there is no such thing as politics here. I will also mark the names that I intend to vote for...I have heard nothing from California since I have been here...I have entered a piece of land 160 acres it is about four or five miles from here and a nice time living there in my house or country residence..." Fine condition. European-American settlement did not begin in any numbers until after 1848 and the California Gold Rush. On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act created the Kansas Territory and the Nebraska Territory, divided by the Parallel 40° North. The Nebraska Territory included parts of the current states of Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. The territorial capital of Nebraska was Omaha. In the 1860s, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim free land granted by the federal government. Many of the first farming settlers built their homes of sod because so few trees grew on the prairies. This first wave of settlement gave the territory a sufficient population to apply for statehood. Nebraska became the 37th state on March 1, 1867, approximately two years after the American Civil War.
