Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, New York, 16pp., complete issue, disbound, July 11, 1874, VG. From the interior, a horizontal full page engraving by Winslow Homer, "Gathering Berries." This wonderful genre engraving by Winslow Homer captures girls and boys in a field with cups and buckets gathering blueberries with haystacks in the field and a sailing ship in the bay in the background. Philip Beam in his book on Winslow Homer says this print is part of Homer's "accent on carefree youth" that was "brought to a climax in the mid-seventies with his 'children's series'" and refers to this engravings as "the fine Gathering Berries," apparently second only to Snap-the-Whip in his estimation.
