A great war-date Union soldier's letter (and Fort Pulaski flag relic), 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], [n. p., but Beaufort, S. C.], June 15, 1862, in part: "…there was an expedition moving against Charleston. The 7th is one of the Reg. but I am not the regiment…this is a very pretty place. The darkeys bring us blackberries and plums. They charge 5 cents a quart for the berries and the plums they charge 10…the things that our sutlers keep are very cheap. Butter is only 50 cents a pound and cheese 20 cents per pound…I cannot afford to buy anything at such a price as they ask for everything…there was a piece of the secession cable from Savannah to Pulaski. They had a telegraph ran on poles also but we found both so they lost their labor of putting down the cable…by the side of the Savannah river the mud [is] to a man's knees. The alligators [are] as thick as haslete pudding…here is a peace of the Seces[sion] flag torn from Pulaski…James B. Sterling...". The original piece of Fort Pulaski flag is included which is made of corse red muslin fabric measuring approximately 3 1/2" long x 1 1/2" wide. Also included is the letter's original "Due 3" transmittal cover endorsed by Chaplain Alonzo B. Flanders 4th Rhode Island Vols. All three items overall VG to near fine.
