A rare war-date West Virginia soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Nathaniel Lewis, Co. G, 6th (West) Virginia Vols., "Camp Smith, Weston, Lewis Co., Va., June 14, 1862," in part: "Dear Cosons [Cousin]…I have enlisted in the army and I have killed a few rebels and came very near being killed myself, but I still living yet and hope to kill some more yet…there was seven in my company wounded. I was one of the seven but I am very near able to walk about again. There is to ore three wounded…Nathaniel Lewis…direct to Weston, Lewis County, Va., Sixth regiment, Company G in care Capt. W. H. Mudinghy [William H. Mattingly]…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
