A manuscript slave bill of sale, 1p. 4to., Maryland, May 14, 1833 in which Alfred Ward Grayson Davis (1806-1865) purchases five female slaves from Conrad S. Knight of Maryland for $650.00. These poor women ranged in age from 9 to 36 years old. Davis was born in Lewis Co., Kentucky and was appointed to West Point, where he roommates with his cousin, the future president of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis. He never graduated West Point and instead when on to study law. He was appointed attorney general of Arkansas by Andrew Jackson in 1827, led a Texas volunteers at the battle of Buena Vista in 1847, served in the Virginia legislature from 1855-56 and finally was appointed major in the Confederate Quartermaster's department. Resigning from service in 1863 he was captured while making his way home only to die there after suffering a stroke in 1865. Expected wear, else VG
