War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Headquarters, Second Corps near Petersburg, Va., Nov. 19, 1864", in part: "…the first division received orders to built winter quarters. Yesterday the order was countermanded and orders to pack up and be ready to march at a moments notice…the first Div. did not move last night, but some troops and wagons were moving…the 148th has been to N. Y. with Butler. Quite a pleasant trip and one which they enjoyed very much…there is a great deal of talk of a Thanksgiving dinner which is to be got up for the soldiers, but no one expects it but new recruits…I certainly do not wish any photographs taken from the ambrotype which sent you. One like that is plenty for a family. I may…try it again…after I am twenty two years old, if I like that long…there is no one that I care particularly for in Waterloo…I thought I when I left that…I was in love, never should think as much of anyone else as I did her but a change has come over the spirit of my dreams and I am afraid I think more of myself than anyone else…perhaps…half a loaf [is] better than no bread…let the whole town marry when it pleases…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
